Lactation Support

Optimising breastfeeding promotes mother-child bonding and is protective to the infant by providing optimal bioavailable nutrition and nourishment, as well as promoting immune protection and reducing allergy incidence by fostering a healthy infant microbiome. Lactation support requires an understanding of mum on her breast-feeding journey, planning for success and challenges, competence in lactation physiology and appropriate referral points (i.e. Australian Breastfeeding Association, La Leche League and International Board-Certified Lactation Consultants).

Clinical Naturopaths can also support mum’s and bub’s physiological health and nutrient status during breastfeeding with supplementation and nutrient dense meals. They can also offer safe herbal interventions such as galactagogue herbs to promote breast milk production/supply, and carminatives to reduce infant reactivity/gastrointestinal discomfort, effective herbal therapies to promote healthy mood, sleep, and wellbeing in new mothers and compound topical therapies i.e., vaginal tissue-healing and recovery post-partum/nipple-creams.
