Why a Self-Care Routine is More Important Than You Think

With more focus than ever on wellness and self-care in today’s digital climate, it begs the question— why does having a self-care routine really matter?

Self-care might be as simple as asking yourself, “What fills my emotional cup?” or “What helps recharge my battery?”

At its core, self-care begins with mindfulness—the ability to recognize and reflect on your own needs and desires to nurture your best self. It’s about stepping back to evaluate your life and understanding what satisfies you physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.

Why Self-Care Needs to Be Intentional

In today’s fast-paced world, making time for mindful self-reflection can be challenging. That’s why scheduling self-care is crucial. Just like planning for success in any other area of life, self-care requires intention. It’s not a luxury—it’s a necessity.

And the time you invest in self-care? It pays off many times over. Research has shown that regularly engaging in self-care (not just once in a blue moon!) can:

  • ✅ Reduce or eliminate anxiety
    ✅ Reduce or eliminate depression
    ✅ Lower stress levels
    ✅ Improve concentration
    ✅ Minimize frustration and anger
    ✅ Increase happiness
    ✅ Boost energy levels

If you've spent so much time taking care of everyone (and everything) else that you’ve forgotten how to care for yourself, don’t worry—you’re not alone. Reconnecting with what brings you joy is the first step.

To help you get started, here are five simple steps to developing a self-care routine:

1. Identify What Recharges You

Make a list of things that bring you joy—no matter how big or small. Some examples could be:

  • Listening to (or playing) music

  • The colour green

  • Watching sunsets

  • Exercise

  • Swimming

Now, think about how you can incorporate these into your daily life. Maybe it’s as simple as lighting a candle in your room, playing relaxing background music, or setting aside 30 minutes each morning for yoga.

2. Set Realistic Self-Care Goals

Once you’ve explored different self-care activities, set goals to integrate them into your routine. Schedule them into your day, making sure they’re realistic and measurable. Start small and gradually build from there.

3. Find Support

Sustaining a self-care practice is easier with support. Share your self-care goals with the people in your life. Better yet, find a friend to join you—whether it’s a morning walk, a meditation session, or a creative hobby.

4. Adjust As You Go

Self-care isn’t rigid. Life will throw obstacles your way, and that’s okay. Be flexible, adjust your approach when needed, and most importantly, remind yourself of the benefits of prioritizing you.

5. Keep Going

Self-care isn’t a one-time fix—it’s an ongoing practice. The more you nurture yourself, the better equipped you’ll be to handle life’s challenges.

So, what’s one small thing you can do today to take better care of yourself? 💚
